In this article, I will guide you through 10 steps to maintain a clean, clear and youthful skin. If you are already trying several beauty treatments but all of them are going in vain, then you must be doing one of these things wrong which doesn’t let you achieve the expected results.
So here are the 10 steps in maintaining a glowing, clean, clear and youthful face.
“Outer beauty captures the eyes, Inner beauty captures the heart”
1. Stay Hydrated
Always have a bottle of water alongside you to keep you from dehydrating. Let me guide you through how hydrating yourselves can make your skin plumper, firmer and have a luminous glow.
Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in connective tissues of our body, 50% of which is present in our skin.
What does it do ?
As a component of connective tissue it helps in lubrication, thus essentially helping body tissues glide over each other without much difficulty.
But more importantly it has another function. Each molecule of hyaluronic acid can hold as much as 1000 times its own weight in water. Hyaluronic acid basically holds water like a sponge making your skin plumper.
If the water levels decrease your skin will appear dull and scaly. So the natural and easiest way to take care of this is drink ample amounts of water. Check out our article on a guide to maintaining your body’s hydration levels.
2. Be Gentle With Your Skin
When handling your skin, say while washing your face with water or drying it using a towel, be gentle with it. Handling your skin harshly leads to small micro tears which aren’t visible to eye, but are an invitation to hyper-pigmentation(or blackening), bruises as well as infections such as acne. Also pollutants may enter through these micro tears further damaging your skin.
I would suggest you take care of it even while sleeping, such as not pressing your hands against the face. Some people have the habit of resting their face on their palm which is a very bad habit and it puts immense pressure on the skin.
3. Avoid Touching Your Face Repeatedly
Those who are prone to touching their face are much more likely to have acne, dark spots and hyper-pigmentation. There are mainly two reasons for it – Firstly, microbes from fingertips reach the skin – bacteria – viruses, allergens and may lead to infection. Secondly, frequent touches to the skin produces microscopic tears through which pollutants and microbes may enter causing infections and damage.
4. Massage Every Once In A While
Gently massage your face every now and then, to increase blood circulation to the skin. Thus more nutrients and water reaches the skin thus nourishing it. This exercise can be done while applying cream or lotion to face. Do it by gently massaging your skin in circular motions all around the face.
5. Always Sleep With A Clean Face
An average person sleeps for 6-8 hours. It is a time period long enough in which your skin can get replenished with nutrients if you wash it before sleeping. So use a face wash to cleanse your face and put on a cream or lotion suitable for your skin type and let it do its wonders overnight. I think it is self-explanatory what a dirty skin with pollutants and microbes over it will achieve overnight.
6. Taking Care Of Your Diet
“What you put in your mouth is equally important to what you apply on your skin.”
A few thumb rules regarding a good diet for maintaining a healthy skin:
Eat healthy foods which help in maintaining better skin mainly fruits and vegetables. When eating fruits and specifically vegetables follow “rainbow diet” . “Rainbow diet” essentially means eating fruits and vegetables of different colour.
Also foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as mackerel, sardine and walnuts, chia seeds have a beneficial effect on your skin.
Another group of foods are Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin A rich foods.
Foods to avoid : Those rich in carbohydrates, especially refined carbohydrates should be avoided.
Also oily foods contain trans fats and saturated fats and hence must be avoided.
7. Exfoliate Once In A While
Set for yourself a reminder once every week or 15 days to exfoliate your skin. Choose an exfoliator suitable for your skin type. Apply it and wash after 15-30 minutes.
How does it work ?
It removes dead skin cells from the upper layer of the skin and also it helps nutrients to reach deeper layers.
8. Decrease Stress
Stress has an adverse effect on your skin. Stress causes release of increased levels of cortisol, a hormone produced by adrenal gland. Increased levels can cause acne breakouts on face and body. It gradually gives an invitation to wrinkling and under eye bags.
9. Get Enough Sleep
Insomnia and irregular sleeping patterns may affect your body adversely and may even show it on your face. Yes, dark circles around your eyes are a sign of sleeplessness. Therefore, have a satisfied, fulfilled doze every night.
10. Avoid Pollution & Sun
These are environmental causes.
Prolonged exposure to sunlight causes hyper-pigmentation and also uneven skin tone. So apply a sunscreen lotion or cover your face with a cloth before you go out in the sun.
As for the pollutants either clean them off the face, neutralize them or create a barrier so that they don’t attach on the skin in the first place.
